PAYMENT CARD BRANDS REPRESENTED AT 2009 ANNUAL CONFERENCE

More than 80 people — including representatives from American Express, Discover Network, MasterCard Worldwide, and Visa — attended the MAG's second annual conference, which was held October 13-16, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency Tamaya in Albuquerque. The three-day event kicked off with a joint session on mobile and contactless payments with the MAG and Smart Card Alliance as a follow-up to the initial such meeting held at the SCA conference earlier in the year.

Programming included an update on the MAG’s activities, educational presentations from Elite Sponsors, a joint payment card session, a status report from the Chargebacks Task Force, and a new idea in cash management by one of a MAG Board Member. The highlight of the meeting for the merchants was the open roundtable discussion during which MAG Members had a chance to converse about current issues and opportunities for the future.

For a break in the action, the group was entertained at a special local rodeo Thursday evening. More than a few intrepid souls joined in the barrel races! Click here to see the photo gallery. A good time was definitely had by all!

A highlight of the final day was a next-steps discussion about the MAG’s priorities for the coming year. The most popular suggestions were:
  • Collaboration with the Payment Brands
  • Contactless/mobile payments
  • Data security encryption – working with PCI SSC and X9
  • Commissioning a study for long-term payments industry road map, including role of Chip and PIN
  • Online transactions security
  • Chargebacks rules compliance
  • MAG web site enhancements
An evaluation survey was distributed to the conference attendees. Results will be distributed to the membership at large via MAGmail.

In addition to almost all of the MAG’s merchant members, representatives from McDonald’s Corporation and OfficeMax, Inc. also participated. This year’s attendance increased almost 50% over the inaugural event in New Orleans. The MAG sincerely appreciates the following sponsors, who were instrumental in making the 2009 conference another rousing success. Mark your calendar and watch your MAGmail for information about the Mid-Year Conference, which will be held February 17-18, 2010, in Dallas.
