The credit card and online transaction processing were invented in the US.  The US led the way in PIN debit, integrated POS, and with a cheap and reliable telecommunications infrastructure, has built the largest credit card market in the world. However, somewhere along the way, the US became complacent, and in many ways lags many different regions of the world – and not just in EMV. Mobile payments, peer-to-peer, and other innovations are now popping up thousands of miles away from North America. With its global scope and reach, Worldpay will discuss payment trends occurring in a variety of markets across the globe, as well as a near-term recap of the Fall Card Association changes. Moderator: Laura Townsend, SVP, Operations, Merchant Advisory Group

Laura TownsendLaura serves as the SVP, Operations of the Merchant Advisory Group (MAG). In this role, she is responsible for delivering on operational optimization strategies on behalf of MAG’s merchant members through collaboration with industry stakeholders which is an integral part of MAG’s overall strategic plan. Laura is as an independent consultant to the Merchant Advisory Group and the broader retail community with focus on strategic planning, operational optimization strategies, and cost control tactics specific to consumer payments, emerging payment technologies and trends, and corporate cash management. Previously, Townsend led corporate cash, consumer payment, and global digital product management initiatives including emerging innovative consumer experience opportunities at McDonald’s Corporation most recently as the Senior Director, Global Cashless & Digital Products. In addition, Laura has held various leadership roles on external industry boards and special interest groups with the objective to drive positive change in payments through multi-stakeholder collaboration and education. Laura has an undergraduate degree from Northern Illinois University and is a native of Illinois.   



Presenter: Chris Francis, Vice President of Market Development, Worldpay US, Inc.

Chris Francis photoChris Francis is Vice President of Market Development for Worldpay focusing specifically on the Retail and Grocery industries. He is responsible for analyzing industry events and trends and positioning Worldpay to provide superior card processing functionality and cost management for US retailers. Chris started at Worldpay in 2000 and has served numerous functions including Operations, QA, Product Definition and most recently supporting the Corporate Business Unit’s sales team in defining customer requirements and creating technical solutions to meet customer needs. 

Chris has held a variety of positions within the payment processing industry since 1992. He initially was responsible for providing card processing service and support to retail customers across a variety of verticals, specializing in grocery and petroleum. Additional responsibilities since that time have covered all facets of payment processing (installation, conversion, network operations, problem resolution, and product development), both at merchant acquirers as well as software vendors (Diebold, Verifone, Radiant Systems). During this time Chris has been extensively involved in crafting solutions to meet specific merchant needs during a very dynamic period within the payments industry.

Chris received his B.S. from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1992 in Industrial Psychology with instruction on technical subjects including electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and software development.
