MAG Webinar: Best Practices in Payment - Making the Most of Electronic Checks at the Point Of Sale

The Merchant Advisory Group’s Best Practices Committee was pleased to present a webinar on April 4th discussing Best Practices in Payment - Making the Most of Electronic Checks at the Point Of Sale.

The webinar featured:

  • Moderator: Doug Linkowski, Senior Director of Credit Card Operations for Marriott Corporation and MAG Board Member

  • Speaker: Daphne Gilliam, Senior Manager ACH and Check for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

    Bio: Daphne supports ACH and checks presented at the point of sale for Walmart and Sam's Club in the US and Puerto Rico. Daphne joined Walmart in 2009. Prior to joining Walmart, Daphne was a Product Manager at SunTrust Bank. She has also worked at Wachovia Bank in Treasury Management; and CheckFree Corporation's Electronic Commerce Division.

    Daphne is currently the NACHA Electronic Check Council (ECC) Enhancements Workgroup Leader, ECC's Business Check Conversion Task Force Leader and a participant in NACHA's Expedited Processing and Settlement (EPS) Industry Support Group.

    Daphne holds a BS degree in Business Administration from Virginia State University and an MBA from Southern Illinois University. She is an Accredited ACH Professional (AAP) and a Certified Cash Manager (CCM).

  • Speaker: Henry Peloquin Jr., Director of Consumer Payments for CVS Caremark

    Bio: Henry Peloquin is a Director of Consumer Payments for CVS Caremark Corporation. His tenure with CVS Caremark began in January, 1992 and has been working in Payments since 1999. He has held various positions in Payments during the past 12 years. He graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1993 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

    General responsibilities include managing authorization and settlement processes for all forms of consumer payments at over 7,300 retail locations, 4 mail order facilities and over 600 Minute Clinic locations. This includes managing agreements and relationships with all partners including Card brands, Debit Networks, Acquirers, Financial Institutions, Check Vendors, etc. Additionally, he oversees non-merchandise consumer facing revenue initiatives such as retail ATM’s and Gaming.

  • Speaker: Susan Pandy, Senior Director, Internet and eCommerce, NACHA

    Bio: Ms. Pandy manages the strategic direction of NACHA’s Internet Council, a membership program that seeks to advance electronic commerce over open networks by enabling digital business. In this role, Ms. Pandy is a product manager for all internet and telephone-initiated ACH transactions, including mobile. Over the last nine years, she has shaped the council’s ability to pursue cutting edge industry issues related to data/transaction security, privacy, authentication, authorization, identity management, fraud, compliance, and currently, mobile banking and payments, contactless payments, and person-to-person payments. Susan supports other NACHA strategic initiatives as part of the advanced payments solutions group to drive innovation in the ACH Network.

    Prior to joining NACHA, Ms. Pandy led the Center for eGovernance at the National Academy of Public Administration, a D.C. think tank, where she designed programs to support the President’s Management Initiative to expand e-government and implement the eGovernment Act of 2002.

    Ms. Pandy has been published with the U.S. GAO, The Public Manager, the OECD and Cooperation and several publications for NACHA. She received her BS in Political Science from the University of Toledo, her MPA from Cleveland State University and is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in Public Administration & Policy at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University and will graduate in May 2012.
  • Speaker: Jeanette Fox, Senior Director, Risk Investigations & Research, NACHA

This webinar featured two industry veterans discussing their experiences implementing different versions of Check 21 capabilities at the point of sale. Ms. Gilliam presented on POP and Mr. Peloquin Jr. presented on BOC. Ms. Pandy and Ms. Fox shared data they had on BOC and POP and discussed future volume trends/how these applications are used in the industry, how we collect and analyze the data, etc. They also spoke towards the issues of the ACH in the digital wallet (emerging technology) and expedited processing and settlement (same-day settlement).
