King Soopers parent company Kroger plans to widen Visa card ban, citing excessive fees

Kroger Co., the biggest U.S. supermarket chain and parent company to King Soopers, plans to widen a ban on Visa Inc. cards to its Smith’s food and drug division in another sign of merchants’ growing angst over the fees they’re charged for credit and debit cards.

Starting April 3, Smith’s stores won’t accept Visa credit cards, though customers can still use Visa debit cards there, the company said Friday in a statement. The ban follows Kroger’s decision in July to stop accepting Visa credit cards at its Foods Co. Supermarkets unit in California.
